Norway’s importance to black metal is no secret. But the legend of the country’s Forgotten Woods is lesser known. During the early and mid 1990s Forgotten Woods released three obscure, cult full length albums on the No Colours label. Among those who managed to hear them, the band gained a legendary reputation for bringing a different, avant-garde style to a black metal genre that was already stagnating. Presently in 2007 Forgotten Woods has returned with their first new album in more than 10 years. Maintaining their signature strangeness, at times the band is much more raw and aggressive, and at others more psychedelic and tinged with post-punk angularity. Yet at no point during Race Of Cain is there a time when the music can’t simply be called black metal. A defining moment for avant black metal in 2007, Race Of Cain is true to Forgotten Woods roots and maintains a level of originality lacking in today’s aging underground scene. A MESSAGE FROM FORGOTTEN WOODS:
Forgotten Woods has never seen the need to explain their art, as it should
be open to interpretation for the listener. Nor has the need to clarify
certain aspects of our ideology been needed before. When our art could
potentially hurt our cause things will have to be spoon fed, as usual,
for the commoner to understand. Therefore; this to inform...
The lyrics for the song 'Third Eye (New Creature)' contains the phrase
"Sieg Heil!" We never thought twice about using the lyrics as
they are intended to be a rant against herd-idiocy, conformity and brainwashing.
Christianity would be the prime example of all these things and is therefore
a main target so-to-speak, infiltrating every pore of human existence.
To make a point we used the universally known cry for retard behavior
and mass psychosis, namely "Sieg Heil". Intentionally used to
make a point. It shouldn't be very hard to understand.
Understanding now we might have overestimated the 'Black Metal Scene',
this has hereby been clarified. Forgotten Woods is a Black Metal band;
the most potent musical advocate of individuality and self upheaval. Even
considering such a band being sympathetic to Nazism or its equals is not
only a contradiction in itself, but an insult and a complete lack of understanding
of the foundations in Black Metal. Forgotten Woods will never condone
or support any political or religious organization or movement. We accept
only free thought and the freedom to express it as you please.
