HALF MAKESHIFT - L'ANSE
AMORT CD

Half Makeshift is the solo
project of Maryland's Nathan Michael. The first release under the
Half Makeshift moniker, Aphotic Leech, released by Utech Records,
was a single expansive track of strained piano, ominous war drums
and subterranean guitar noise described by Brainwashed as "nothing
short of massive" and "an entire world of sound with viscerally
effective moments." L'anse Amort contains four tracks that expand
on Aphotic Leech's density, creating more space and reflection, more
peaks and valleys. The monumental 17 minute opener "Whale Heart"
builds from a simple melody and crackling electro-static to eventually
collapse under its own weight in a huge Nadja-esque wall of drone
riffery. Tracks like "Oblivion" and the title track recall
the vast landscapes of Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore and even Radiohead
at their most adventurous. Different from anything previously released
by 20 Buck Spin, L'anse Amort is epic in a way most "post-rock"
bands can only aspire to. Comes specially packaged in a vertical gatefold
with four photographic postcards. |

After last year's L'anse
Amort stunner on 20 Buck Spin, Half Makeshift is back with its final
release Omen. “Omen” is a devastating observation of formidable
experimental ambient drone-like subtle mastery. With moments that
reminisce with such like-minded acts as NADJA, SUNN 0))), GODSPEED
YOU BLACK EMPEROR, and A SILVER MOUNT ZION, “Omen” is
an opus of dense and flowing sonic terrain where cinematic sound visions
create vast, desperate, and devastating scenarios, almost serving
its purpose like a desperate doomsday soundtrack. From such scenarios
as a blissful jaunt amongst a great ocean or a vast open field, to
such disturbing yet picturesque scenarios where crumbling destructive
frequencies envision skyscrapers falling and crumbling into the sea
or an enormous tide crashing down onto civilization. |

Aphotic Leech is the first movement
in a series of ever changing modes which make up what Half Makeshift has
slowly become. A bath of heavy drone and bitter piano chords strewn over
top of subtle glitch work and manipulated percussion, Aphotic Leech trades
malice for despair and shuns any probable hope. Created in November of 2006
from austere piano pieces, string fragments, a live percussion specimen
and other various arrangements, this piece grew to be much larger than originally
intended through a series of long manipulation and thought processes. It
engulfs the body in a thick black sludge only to dissipate at once, become
a reborn substance and finally drain itself leaving a small fragment lingering
after it expires. |

Another limited CD-R from Nathan
Michael's Half Makeshift whose L'Anse Amort full length was released on
20 Buck Spin earlier in 2007. This new disc from Half Makeshift/Nathan Michael
will serve as a bridge of sorts between his new release on 20BuckSpin and
the new material he is working on for an upcoming release. Final’s
deconstructed guitar and dark piano melodies provide the soundtrack to the
quiet after the storm. Numbered edition of 151 split between two versions
featuring different paper stocks and front cover images. |
