UPDATED 03.27.07

A quick update to let you know the Rakhim CD is available now and will be shipping out this week. Here’s a description:

What if Z'ev had written the intro to Darkthrone's "Blaze In The Northern Sky"? With that question in mind Finland's RAKHIM unearth "Crimson Umbrella" a two-track fit of kraut-noise psychosis, schizophrenic percussive clatter and layers of effects and over-processed vocal chants and screams. The nightmarish deconstruction of "Transylvanian Error" and "Ultimate Sword" bare only trace elements of main members Krypt and Rudimentor's day jobs in Circle and Pharaoh Overlord, with RAKHIM indulging in sonic terror too far gone for the aforementioned bands. Although the album's title makes reference to L.A.'s great Jesters Of Destiny, RAKHIM would more aptly call to mind Wolf Eyes filtered through a lengthy Faust tape jam. Best experienced through headphones at appropriately ear-bleeding volume.

Coffins will make their US debut at this years Emissions From The Monolith festival at Emo’s in Austin Texas, May 24th-27th. Coffins is also tentatively planning a few other shows in the Texas area. Doesn’t look like they’ll make it out of Texas this time kids. The good news is 20 Buck Spin has made a deal with Coffins to release their 3rd full length album, this time worldwide. Although not due until early 2008, hopefully we’ll be able to bring them back to the US for a real tour upon its release.

In other Coffins news the split CD with The Arm & Sword 0f A Bastard God will be released hopefully in time for Emissions. Special packaging on this one including amazing new artwork from David D’Andrea (sonofenoch.com).

A new Coffins t-shirt should be available from 20 Buck Spin in the next month or two.

Australia’s Whitehorse will have their 2xCD 20 Buck Spin debut released during April/May (some samples at myspace.com/getonthehorse). Whitehorse now has Rob Mayson from Grey Daturas playing drums for them.There are also dudes from Pisschrist and 731 in Whitehorse. Whitehorse is also planning a US tour in June/July and although most venues have yet to be confirmed, the routing looks like this:

June 29th – Bay Area, CA
June 30th – Bay Area, CA
July 1st – Bay Area, CA
July 2nd – Santa Cruz/Davis, CA
July 3rd – Portland, OR
July 4th – Funhouse – Seattle, WA (likely with Wormwood)

July 7th – NYC
July 8th – Brooklyn, NY
July 10th – Philly, PA
July 12th – San Diego, CA
July 13th – Los Angeles, CA
July 14th – Big Sur, CA

The Stormcrow / Sanctum split CD is ready to go to production, just waiting on the band to give us a CD master! Devastating crust for Bolt Thrower / Axegrinder fanatics. CD will come in a gatefold a la the new Asunder CD and will include a fold out mini-poster reproducing the amazing gatefold LP artwork. The LP is already available from No Options Records.

A few new releases to announce:
Half Makeshift has agreed to release its next record on 20 Buck Spin. The solo project of one Nathan Michaels is a bit of a departure from the “usual” 20 Buck Spin release (if there is one), but was so brilliant we couldn’t refuse. One track “Whale Heart” is already posted at myspace.com/halfmakeshift. And “Aphotic Leech” was just released by Utech Records (check out mailorder to get this one now).

Toronto’s powerviolence maniacs The Endless Blockade will do a record with 20 Buck Spin. This one will be a CD and LP release, the first time we’ve done both formats for one band. They recently toured with Iron Lung and will go to Europe with them in May. They have many releases already available so check their site, www.theendlessblockade.com to sample their mix of super-fast and super-slow powerviolence.

Grey Daturas and Monarch are releasing a split album and 20 Buck Spin will release the CD version. Hailing from Australia and France respectively, both bands have a slew of already available releases. Grey Daturas have several releases on their own labels including a split with Wolf Eyes. Monarch has a new release out on Crucial Blast.

Grey Daturas will also have another 20 Buck Spin release containing outtakes from previous recording sessions and some other material. (www.greydaturas.com)

Several other releases are in the works right now but not quite ready to be announced.

Finally there’s a healthy amount of new shit in our mailorder since the last update. The 2xLP of Wormwood’s Starvation album, Leviathan’s The Blind Wound LP, every available album from Ukranian black metallers Hate Forest and Drudkh, including Drudkh’s most recent Songs of Grief And Solitude all acoustic CD, Dead Raven Choir’s Cask Strength Black Metal 2xCD and Selenoclast Wolves releases, the new Nadja CD released by Archive and more stuff from labels like Firedoom, Battle Kommand, Supernal, Ektro and Life Is Abuse.

I’ll be at SXSW and in particular at the Alternative Tentacles showcase if anyone is around.

Also, I’m now writing a new column for Maximum Rock N Roll about metal. Mainly show and new album reviews. So if you don’t get MRR, now you have an excuse to do so. Contact addy is the same as the label one.

20 Buck Spin September 2006 News Update

* Coffins CD and Shirt
* Book of Black Earth CD
* Wormwood CD
* Rakhim CD
* 20 Buck Spin Shirt

Coffins - The Other Side Of Blasphemy CD
The brand new COFFINS full length is now available on 20 Buck Spin - listen to Blood And Bone and see cover art at 20buckspin.com - $10 postpaid

COFFINS was spawned from a need to create slow, crawling detuned death metal in the vein of old masters like AUTOPSY and WINTER. An obvious HELLHAMMER/FROST obsession rears its putrid head upon opening this Coffin as well. Bringing the pain all the way from Japan, COFFINS’ 2nd full length release "The Other Side Of Blasphemy" is derivative in the best possible sense of the word. No frills, just thrills for those disgusted at the mockery nowadays metal seems to have become. Mid-paced, skull-crushing death metal and brutally low vocals - COFFINS carries the torch that very few seem to bear. Available only in North America.

www.coffins.jp
www.myspace.com/intothecoffin

In honor of the COFFINS release 20 Buck Spin has also made a limited amount of COFFINS T-shirts. This shirt is only available from 20 Buck Spin and who knows if and when we’ll be able to make more of them. So drop it like it’s hot. You can order these through 20buckspin.com. The shirts are made on high quality American Apparel T-shirts.

Book of Black Earth - The Feast CD
The debut full length from Seattle’s BOOK OF BLACK EARTH, ‘The Feast’ will be available in late September. Listen to May Your God Deny You and see cover art at 20buckspin.com

Seattle's BOOK OF BLACK EARTH formed out of the smouldering ash of TEEN CTHULHU in 2003. A demo was recorded and eventually they hooked up with Portland's FALL OF THE BASTARDS for a split album. The Feast is the first full length album from BOOK OF BLACK EARTH. Punishing blackened death metal (or deathened black metal if you prefer) is the order of the day. Subtle and unintrusive keyboard strains throughout give an epic and vast quality to the memorably brutal songs on display. Vocalist TJ Cowgill's menacing gutteral delivery coupled with the assault of Joe Axler's (SKARP) double-bass drum march propel the songs to sit comfortably alongside far more experienced and noteworthy bands in the genre. And unlike most death metal, The Feast is concise and over soon enough to leave you wanting much more.

www.myspace.com/bookofblackearth

20 Buck Spin is happy to announce the release of the 2nd full length album from Seattle’s WORMWOOD on CD. Titled “Starvation” the album sounds like nothing else happening right now, yet subtle comparisons can be made with bands like KYLESA, NEUROSIS, TARANTULA HAWK, even SKEPTICISM. Elements of doom, crust, goth, metal and prog all swirl together into one horrible nightmare soundtrack. Recorded at the band’s home studio in Seattle with the assistance of Billy Anderson, WORMWOOD features no guitars, but rather two basses, percussion, keyboards and samplers. WORMWOOD has previously released a full length as well as several split EPs with bands like FALL OF THE BASTARDS, THE ESOTERIC and TEEN CTHULHU. The album will be packaged in a digipak with a booklet and should be out in October.

RAKHIM is the name of a recent side project of some of the dudes from Finland’s krautrock weirdos CIRCLE. 20 Buck Spin will be releasing a limited edition CD (likely only 500 copies) from this project who thus far have released a one-sided LP on Italy’s Qbico label. The CD features two extended tracks of freakish, frightening noisescapes made up of processed screams and drones, free jazz proggy percussion mania and dubbed out weirdness. Aquarius describes Rakhim as “…some long lost recently discovered Faust jam caught surreptitiously on tape way back in the day.” Look for that to be released in the coming months.

We’ll have a super limited 20 Buck Spin t-shirt design coming in the next week or two. We’re only making about 24 of these total and several will be given to friends. We’ll make a few available through the website. The design was done by Arik Roper. You can see it at the 20 Buck Spin myspace page: www.myspace.com/20buckspin

NEWS, UPDATED 06.08.06

The Obsessed “Lunar Womb” LP is now available at 20buckspin.com. There are two choices, the regular black vinyl version and a blue splatter vinyl version that is limited to 200 copies and only available through the 20buckspin website. The insert contains informative liner notes written by Joe Carducci (Rock & The Pop Narcotic) and plenty of photos from that era of the band. The LPs layout was handled by Ben West of Oakenthrone Zine. Order it now at 20buckspin.com

Coffins and Book of Black Earth are both finishing up their full-length albums to be released on 20 Buck Spin in the Summer. Soon we’ll update the website with band pages and MP3s from both releases.
Stuff from the following labels will be in stock in the next few weeks: Paradigms Recordings, Throne, Celebrate Psi Phenomenon and Ektro.

Here are the reviews of the 3 latest releases from Aquarius Records (reprinted here without permission, but you should buy stuff from them at www.aquariusrecords.org)

BLACK BONED ANGEL Bliss And Void Inseparable (20 Buck Spin) cd 13.98
We talk about stuff being heavy all the time. Stuff being crushing. Pummeling. Sludgy. We describe slow heavy music with words like tarpit, and lumbering, and plodding. Deep. Cavernous. Subterranean. We try desperately to evoke the sort of abject brutality that this music makes us feel, lets us hear. But the truth is, while all of those words do describe Black Boned Angel, they barely manage to capture just how slow and low, heavy and completely skullcrushing this new record is. In huge letters, printed on the inside of the sleeve, are the words "Transcendence Can Only Be Reached At Maximum Volume" and truer words were never spoken.Ô
Black Boned Angel is the darkside of Mr. Campbell Kneale, better know for his long running blissdrone outfit Birchville Cat Motel. A fascination with metal, and a desire to reach the depths of utter heaviness, led Campbell from the droning path of BCM and into a world of black terror and skull peeling ferocity, a harrowing path of ear shredding, heart stopping, brain melting brutality. And it seems he has acclimated quite well thank you.
Bliss And Void Inseparable is the third installment in Kneale's insidious plan to create a record so massive, that it collapses all of time and space, sucking the entire solar system into an alternate universe the size of a pea. And he's almost succeeded. We will perpetually live in fear knowing that the next BBA record could be the one that destroys the world as we know it. For now, we will luxuriate in the massive soul shearing metallic doooooom that is BAVI. The record begins with massive plods, each one the footfall of a beast so large we can barely comprehend its mass, instead, when it steps down, shockwaves roll out in all directions, like a sonic boom caused by a million downtuned guitars, leaving an fifty foot deep impression in the earth, the compacted ground littered with skeletons and corpses, the dirt wet with blood. Over this occasional black hole plod is laid a white hot streak of upper echelon feedback, an endless stretch of high end reverberation. It's like some sort of Moss / Whitehouse mashup. But even then, the guitars grow, feeding off the darkness, the feedback fades and the strange plodding coheres into some sort of prehistoric riff, a groove so slow and low that it's like a black glacier sliding in slow motion across the desiccated earth. But BBA's hellish pit is not with out hope, not without light, or melody, chanting vocals hover right below the surface, barely audible under a gauzy veil of guitar crumble and amp rooooaaaarrr. At about the halfway point, ghostly piano is introduced, offering up minor key, slightly atonal melodies, adding color to BBA's black world. But also adding a creepy ominous edge. Like the soundtrack to thee sort of horror movie that leaves half the audience frightened to death. This funeral plod continues on until very near the end, where the low end drops out, leaving nothing but a snarled tangled web of feedback, a shimmering lattice of high end, which eventually fades into nothingness.Ô
It's a bit hard to absorb, best to just lay back and let this snarling black beast have its way with you. You might survive, halo tarnished and soul a bit blackened, and if for some reason you don't this angel will carry you lovingly down into the depths.Ô
SO RECOMMENDED!Ô

MRTYU Blood Tantra (20 Buck Spin) 2cd 14.98
We've had some cd-r evidence a while backÔpointing to the existence of some mighty black beast, trolling the midnight forests of the New Zealand wilds, the thing they call Mrtyu, some say it's a man, but what kind of man can spew forth such a noxious cacophony? Some say it is a demon from the depths of hell, unleashed after centuries of incarceration in some hellish underground lair, but how did a demon learn to play a guitar and use a 4 track? We've been led to believe however that Mrtyu is actually the musical Mr. Hyde to one Antony Milton's Dr. Jeckyll. What proof do we have? The cd-r label Pseudo Arcana, run by an entity known as Antony Milton, Nether Dawn, a group fronted by a shadowy figure possibly also Mr. Milton, and then there are of course a couple previous cd-r releases, which are now known to be the work of one Antony Milton. This double disc collection gathers up all existing evidence, including previous releases as well as a brand new previously unreleased sonic document. Why the hubbub? Well, friends, it could be that Mrtyu offer up some of the darkest, blackest, heaviest sounds south of Heaven? That to trudge through Mrtyu's sonic world is a journey to the brink of madness? Perhaps, but the best way to truly understand the fury and glory of the mighty Mrtyu is to listen. Each track a blast of primitive power, each with it's own unique sonic energy.ÔSheets of shimmering feedback drift over crumbly rumbling super distorted guitar background noise. Very static and raga-like, quite reminiscent of Total or Skullflower. A lo-fi doom dirge, with jagged brittle guitars, distorted vocals (not howls or shrieks, but like indie crooning, all 'distorted' up). A brief blast of Melvins-y sludge but with the high end pushed into the red. Almost like a indie pop song, but deconstructed and dipped in stoner sludge. A bitÔof Sunroof!, a bit of Angus Maclise, a lush shimmering drone, with peals of feedback and throbbing smears of downtuned guitar, all tangled into a gorgeously static thrum. Drones cloaked in black, damaged and druggy, ultra distorted guitars, so downtuned and blown out it sounds like some sort of tectonic event, the guitars form the framework for a truly oppressive atmosphere, a swirl of black clouds and Butthole Surfers-esque feedback, while atop it all, a demonic voice intones and howls and squeals like a rusted hinge. Think Khanate meets Abruptum, but filtered through than NZ noize aesthetic. A howling hellish musical journey through the fires of hell, trudging across pits of black pitch, being dragged bloody and screaming through dark demon infested forests. So harsh and beautifully bilious, drones become dirges, dirges become drones, everything cloaked in black and swathed in buzz.Ô
Bow supplicant, pray for forgiveness, wish for survival, bathe in the blood from your ringing ears. All hail Mrtyu.Ô
These musical missives come housed in a hand screened green and blue, three panel cardstock sleeve, adorned with all manner of pagan and tribal imagery, quite striking!

GRAVES AT SEA Documents Of Grief (20 Buck Spin) cd 13.98
Imagine the standard doom/dirge band to be a large rock, nestled solidly in the earth. Well, pry that rock up, tip it over, and see what slimy, wriggling, many-legged or legless creepy-crawlies squirm in the dark, damp dirt beneath -- that's the shuddering sludge sickness that Graves At Sea make sure you hear in their music.
We know a lot of AQ's sludge-doom lovin' customers are already into this band, judging from the number of copies of their split release with Asunder that we've sold. And if you live on the west coast, perhaps you've been a witness to one of their live shows, a bloody spectacle as we recall... LA's Graves At Sea (not to be confused with the equally doomy Buried At Sea from Chicago) take their doom way seriously. From the bulldozing, slowed down, headbanging riffage from the guitars/bass to the rasping, snarling, distorted, animal vokills of their singer Nathan (appropriately credited in this cd booklet with "hissing goblin tongue/evangelist of misery"), this is HEAVY nastiness for fans of Khanate, Corrupted, Eyehategod, Unearthly Trance, and all other heavy as hell, feedbacking freaks. Actually, let's look and see what else it says in the cd booklet about what some of the other Graves At Sea bandmembers are responsible for... we've got Nick on "sluggish wall of murky despair", Steve on "crushing storm of fire and brimstone" and Roger on "timbre of submarsh sludge". Heck they practically wrote their own review right there!
Four songs, half-an-hour. Originally a cd-r release from '03 (their debut recording), now at last on cd, adorned with much better cover art.

Please repost this update anywhere people might actually give a shit.

In this update:
* Obsessed LP update
* Graves At Sea update
* Black Boned Angel update
* Mrtyu! update
* Coffins release
* Mailorder new stuff / test press contest
* Graves At Sea tour dates

The Obsessed ‘Lunar Womb’ LP reissue looks to be out during May. There will be 1500 copies. 300 copies will be sold through Stonerrock.com and will come on a color that is exclusive to their copies. 200 will come on another color to be sold only through the 20 Buck Spin website. The remaining 1000 will be on black and available everywhere. The insert will feature rare photos and extensive liner notes by Joe Carducci. The record has been remastered by Dave Shirk. No pre-orders!

20 Buck Spin will be releasing Documents Of Grief by Graves At Sea. The band released it themselves previously but it has been unavailable for some time. This is a punishing, ultra-heavy brick of blackened doom on par with the tracks on last years split LP with Asunder. The CD should be ready in time for their upcoming month long US tour. There will be possibly be a limited vinyl edition later in 2006. The band is hammering out the final details of a deal with the label who will release their official debut LP – an announcement from the band will come at the appropriate time.

Black Boned Angel’s “Bliss & Void Inseparable” is finally at production and should become available by the end of April. One long, unbearably dire track that comes to about an hour long. The CD will come in a black on black, cardboard gatefold CD jacket. To see the design, go here: http://www.20buckspin.com/images/Bliss-CD-Jacket-web.jpg

Also in production and to be released in April is the 2xCD release from another New Zealand export, Mrtyu! (the Vedic word for Death). “Blood Tantra – Rituels de sang du culte de Tantra” collects 2 very limited CD-R releases and a never-released epic as well. Names mentioned in relation to Mrtyu! include Abruptum, Throbbing Gristle, Double Leopards, Khanate, The Dead C, etc – with a sound that grinds together harsh noise, ambient, depraved doom, and NZ style weirdness. The CD will be housed in a double CD gatefold jacket. To see the layout, go here: http://www.20buckspin.com/images/spin005_blood_tantra_web.jpg

20 Buck Spin is finishing up a deal to release the new album from Japan’s Coffins in North America. Needless to say we’ve been playing the band’s previous album “Mortuary in Darkness” non-stop since receiving it (as well as various splits). Coffins will appeal to those who enjoy the upbeat sounds of Winter, Autopsy, Hellhammer, Runemagick, etc. This is mid-paced death/doom played in a completely derivative (ie. perfect) fashion. The new album will have 7 or 8 songs and is tentatively titled “The Other Side Of Blasphemy”. Chris Moyen will once again handle the artwork. The album will be released in Europe by Imperium Productions.

We are now carrying quite a few mailorder titles. Between now and the end of April, every order placed will be entered into a drawing to win 1 of 2 Graves At Sea / Asunder Test Press LPs. The test presses have the plain white labels generally associated with test pressings and will come with the Gatefold jacket and poster of the now sold out LP. The following titles are now available at 20buckspin.com with complete descriptions:

NEWS, UPDATED 02.10.06

COMING SOON!

20 Buck Spin will be re-releasing one of the best albums ever, The Obsessed’s ‘Lunar Womb’ on vinyl in the Spring. This long out of print masterpiece will have solid liner notes by Joe Carducci and rare band photos. We’re still figuring out all the details, but rest assured that no album ever belonged back in print more than ‘Lunar Womb’. There will likely be colored vinyl for mailorder. The CD version will be released by the MeteorCity label out of New Mexico in late April.

Campbell Kneale is back from Asia and preparing Black Boned Angel’s second full length album, ‘Bliss & Void Inseparable’ for release through 20 Buck Spin. We’re looking at a Spring release for that as well.

Also in the works is a CD by the mysterious Mrtyu, another New Zealander who may or may not be Antony Milton of the PsuedoArcana label and current Black Boned Angel member. Mrtyu has been described as “Khanate meets Abruptum, filtered through New Zealand noise” (Aquarius Records).

We’re down to about 10 copies of the Graves At Sea / Asunder split LP. This record will not be repressed, so if you haven’t gotten it yet, order now!

Asunder is in the process of recording a new LP at Earhammer Studios in Oakland. Earhammer is the studio run by Greg from Brainoil and Sal from Asunder.

Graves At Sea continue to keep everybody guessing as to when and where their debut LP will be released. In the meantime the band is scheduling their first tour of the East Coast with Rue. The tour will take place roughly between May 16th-29th and will include a stop at the Emissions from the Monolith festival. Dates can be found on the Shifty Records website, www.shiftyrecords.com
