Sorceress dispells any illusions about what kind of a band Opeth is. Sure there is plenty of heaviness but nothing here will conjure up memories of Still Life. Opeth is a prog rock band and Mikael Akerfeldt wears his influences on his sleeve. At its heaviest, Sorceress will evoke the feel of 70s hard rock/proto-metal giants Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Atomic Rooster, Andromeda and their ilk. What Opeth seems to really excel at is the use of dynamics - blending shadings of lightness and dark - heaviness and serenity. All of it is bundled together with old school prog rock sounds. Mellotrons, Hammond organ, and analog synths rear their heads through out. There is no mistaking the Opeth sound of today.
